Grade 3

About Michigan

Knowledge Constructor

Overview‚Äč

In third grade students learn about Michigan history. The Michigan eLibrary has compiled a number of websites suitable for children to learn more about our state. There is information on Michigan Native Americans, folklore, wildlife, birds, bugs, and much more.

Learning Objectives

Students will:

  • Be able to use the Michigan eLibrary for information on Michigan.
  • Be able to learn more about Michigan history, people and wildlife.

Pre-planning

  • Go to the Michigan eLibrary (MeL).
  • Select Kids on the Dashboard
  • Select About Michigan
  • Currently there are 10+ websites for students to use for their research on Michigan.
  • The teacher will want to go through the websites and decide which ones would be most relevant for the students.
  • The Getting To Know Michigan .pdf would be very helpful for the students. It is a coloring book with amazing facts about Michigan.
  • There are eight stories for the students to read for Michigan folklore
  • Michigan .gov has a website designed for students to learn more about Michigan.

Note:

  • There are websites that are too mature for third grade. The reading level is too high and the students would not be able to use them until middle school. For example, Michigana is a very detailed database and would be too much for third graders.
  • Bookmark the websites most relevant for your students in Diigo, Google Bookmarks, or Symbaloo. Even though these websites are easily found in Michigan eLibrary, in third grade having so many choices that are not relevant may be overwhelming.
