AR Flashcards Abraham Lincoln

Knowledge Constructor

Overview

In fourth grade, students learn how to be better researchers and using AR Flashcards, they are taken to a new level with the interactivity of augmented reality. AR Flashcards Lincoln is an iOS app where students can see a full size Lincoln deliver the Gettysburg address, place magical doorways on the ground and walk through them using their device to visit places Lincoln lived. They can also earn badges using the app.

This activity will take two class periods.

Students will:

  • Be able to use the AR Flashcard Abraham Lincoln to do research on him.
  • Understand how to use augmented reality.

Vocabulary Words:

  1. Augmented reality: Augmented reality is a technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user's view of the real world.

To prepare for this lesson:

  • Go to AR Flashcards to learn more about the flashcards available on the site.
    • The site has flashcards for colors, math and space. You print out the flashcards and use them with the apps.
  • Select the AR Flashcards for Abraham Lincoln.
    • There are no print-outs. The ground is the flash card. Set a full-sized Lincoln on the floor and walk around him with your device.
    • Set doorways on the ground and walk through them to see where he lived.
    • For an additional .99 cents, buy the next five doorways in Indiana where he spent much of his youth.
    • There are additional packs that are going to be released throughout 2018.
  • Students are able to do traditional research using research databases and books. Augmented reality is a new way for students to be able to learn and be part of history.

  • Download the iOS or Android app (coming soon) on the student devices.

See Accommodations Page and Charts on the 21things4students.net site in the Teacher Resources.

Directions for this activity:

  1. The students will research Abraham Lincoln using a traditional approach with books and online databases.

  2. The teacher will introduce augmented reality as a new form of research to the students.

  3. The students will watch Lincoln deliver his Gettysburg Address in their classroom using AR Flashcard on their mobile device.

  4. The students will set doorways and walk through them to see where and how he lived.

  5. The students will use the AR research to complement the research the students did with books and databases.

Optional Activities:

  • Students can add these images or videos to their projects about presidents, Abraham Lincoln, famous speeches, etc..
  • Students can also do a screen recording of Abe reciting the Gettysburg Address.

Different options for assessing the students:

  • Observations
  • Check for understanding
  • Use a rubric to assess their entire research project

MITECS: Michigan adopted the "ISTE Standards for Students" called MITECS (Michigan Integrated Technology Competencies for Students) in 2018.
