Whisper

Digital Citizen

Overview‚Äč

Whisper is a Chrome extension that allows the teacher to send quick messages to students without interrupting work time. It can be used with 5th graders to give them feedback or with younger students if they have devices. 

Learning Objectives

Students will:

  • Be able to read the message that is sent by the teacher and complete the request.
  • Understand that communicating this way is convenient for constructive feedback. 
  • Understand that using a tool like this, that one must engage in positive, safe, legal and ethical behavior. 

Vocabulary

  1. Extension:  An extension is a small software program that is downloadable through the Chrome Web Store. 

Pre-planning

  • Teachers:

    • Make sure you are logged into Google Classroom with your school account.
    • Install the Whisper Chrome Extension.
    • Click I am a Teacher.
    • Click the link in the box. A new tab will open up with a key. Highlight and copy that key to your clipboard.
    • Click the Whisper icon and paste the key .
    • A copy of the messages are sent to the teacher’s email.
    • Your classes and students will load automatically.

  • You as the teacher will be the only one using this extension to communicate with the students. Explain to the students if they were to use this tool, that they have to use it appropriately when communicating with others. They must be good digital citizens. 

Accommodations

Steps

  1. Explain to the students that you will be communicating with them as they are doing their work using the Whisper message extension. 

  2. You may send the entire class a message or send the messages individually. 

  3. You will give them feedback as they are doing their projects. 

  4. Teachers:

  • Make sure you are logged into Google Classroom with your school account.

  • Click the Whisper icon and paste the key.
  • Classes and students will load automatically.
  • To message the entire class, click the class name.
  • To message a student, click their name.
  • A copy of the messages are sent to the teacher’s email

      5. As the teacher you will be the one communicating with the students. Explain to them that you are being a good digital citizen and communicating  appropriately when using it. This is a good resource to show how one can be a good digital citizen when communicating online.
